Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and diverse parks, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, about two hours from Arusha. Though relatively small, the park is famous for its dramatic landscapes that shift quickly from groundwater forests and open savannah to acacia woodlands and the shallow alkaline Lake Manyara itself. The lake covers a large portion of the park and attracts thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds, creating breathtaking views, especially during the green season. This rich mix of habitats makes Lake Manyara a photographer’s paradise and a perfect destination for a short but rewarding safari.

The park is best known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior seen in only a few places in Africa, where lions are often spotted resting on acacia branches. Other wildlife commonly seen includes large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, warthogs, and playful troops of baboons that greet visitors near the park entrance. Lake Manyara is also a birdwatcher’s haven, with over 400 recorded bird species, including pelicans, storks, hornbills, and crowned eagles. Game drives here offer close encounters with wildlife set against lush greenery and the towering Rift Valley cliffs.

Lake Manyara National Park is ideal for travelers seeking a relaxed, scenic safari experience and fits perfectly into the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit, often combined with Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. The park can be explored in a half-day or full-day safari, making it suitable for families, first-time safari visitors, and those with limited time. Its year-round appeal, rich biodiversity, and unique wildlife experiences make Lake Manyara a rewarding destination that delivers far more than its size suggests, offering an intimate and memorable encounter with Tanzania’s natural beauty.
