Arusha National Park

Overview

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and diverse protected areas, located just 25–40 minutes from Arusha city and close to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Although smaller than many famous northern circuit parks, it offers an impressive variety of landscapes within a compact area. The park is dominated by Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, whose forested slopes, alpine zones, and dramatic crater create a striking backdrop. Other key features include the lush montane forests, open grasslands, and the Ngurdoto Crater—often called the “Little Ngorongoro” due to its steep walls and rich vegetation.

The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, especially herbivores and primates. Visitors can expect to see giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, bushbucks, and waterbucks roaming freely, while olive baboons and the iconic black-and-white colobus monkeys are commonly spotted in the forest canopy. Although large predators like lions are absent, Arusha National Park is renowned for its birdlife, with over 400 recorded species. The Momella Lakes, a series of shallow alkaline lakes, attract flamingos, pelicans, herons, and many migratory birds, making the park a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers.

Arusha National Park is also unique for the variety of activities it offers. In addition to scenic game drives, visitors can enjoy guided walking safaris with armed rangers, allowing close and safe encounters with wildlife on foot. Canoeing safaris on the Momella Lakes provide a peaceful and intimate way to experience nature, while Mount Meru trekking offers a rewarding 3–4 day hike with breathtaking views, including Kilimanjaro on clear days. Because of its accessibility, calm atmosphere, and diverse experiences, Arusha National Park is ideal for day trips, families, first-time safari travelers, and those beginning or ending a northern Tanzania safari adventure.
